The Wolf Cub Scout adventure, Running with the Pack, focuses on physical fitness with a dash of healthy eating. This fun dice activity combines a craft and a game to help make the adventure more exciting for the Scouts.
Three of the requirements for the Wolf Cub Scout adventure, Running with the Pack, have the Scouts practicing balance and flexibility, but these activities may get a bit boring for the kids if they are just taking turns. This dice game is a great way to make it more fun!
Here are those requirements:
Wolf Adventure Running with the Pack 2. Practice balancing as you walk forward, backward, and sideways.
Wolf Adventure Running with the Pack 3. Practice flexibility and balance by doing a front roll, a back roll, and a frog stand.
Wolf Adventure Running with the Pack 5. Do at least two of the following: frog leap, inchworm walk, kangaroo hop, or crab walk.
How It Works
First, the dice need to be constructed. The Scouts can each make their own pair of dice, or you can make one or two pairs to be shared by all of the Cub Scouts in your den.
The Scouts will roll the dice and do the activities they land on. They can keep track of their progress by checking off what they've done on the checklist.
Running with the Pack Dice Game Supplies
Here's what you'll need:
- Dice and Checklist Printables (enter your email below to download them)
- Cardstock for dice (cardstock will give them the thickness needed to form and hold the cube shape)
- Regular printer paper for checklist
- Scissors
- Tape
- Pencils
How to Assemble
To assemble the dice, cut them out along the solid black lines, and fold along all of the dashed lines.
Tape the tabs underneath the edges. You can use double stick tape, roll a piece of tape onto itself, or simply tape the outside.
Double stick tape can be a little tricky when you're taping the last tab because it's a bit hard to push both sides of the paper together so that the tape adheres to both. I slid a letter opener into the open side and used it to push the inside tab against the side of the cube.
How to Play
Give each child a checklist and a pencil. Have the first Wolf come up and roll the dice. The Scout completes both of the tasks that the dice land on then checks those tasks off on the checklist.
Repeat the process for all the Scouts. If a Wolf lands on a task they have already completed, they roll that die again.
Continue until all the kids have all the tasks checked off.
Game Options
If you are running short on time, you could have them simply pick an uncompleted task to do rather than continuing to roll the dice until one comes up.
Another variation is to have the Scouts pair up. Each Cub makes one of the dice. When they've completed them, they can play the game together until they've both finished all of the requirements.
Making the dice would be a great gathering activity! Have all of the supplies out. When the kids arrive, they can start making their dice.
If you have a den chief, he or she can easily lead this activity. You might want to give them a printout so that they can practice making them in advance.
Requirement 4 of Running with the Pack has the den playing a sport or game and showing good sportsmanship. You can reinforce sportsmanship in this activity too.
Remind the Cub Scouts that being friendly is one of the points of the Scout Law. They can be friendly by ensuring that everyone has a turn and by encouraging each other to do their best.
What other activities have you done for the Running with the Pack adventure?
