Wolf Adventure Germs Alive Recipe Correction

Have you tried to make the fake mucus (aka slime)  for requirement 4 of the Wolf adventure, Germs Alive! using the recipe that's in the Wolf handbook?  Requirement 4 says, “Conduct the mucus demonstration with your den.”

If you have, you know that something is wrong!  The recipe has some errors in the measurements.

Pete Siegel saw the corrected recipe in the Facebook group for people who attended the Cub Scout training at Philmont last summer.  I totally missed that post, so a huge thank you goes out to Pete for sending it to me!

The recipe is on page 239 of the Wolf Handbook. It is not in the Wolf Den Leader Guide.  If you don't have them already, you can click over and order the electronic version through my affiliate links.  (If you don't have a Kindle, you can read them with a FREE Kindle reading app.  Read about it here.)

The supply list is the same as in the book:

  • Borax
  • Warm water
  • White school glue
  • Food coloring
  • Two plastic containers
  • Quart-size zippered storage bag
  • Pinch of dirt, flour, glitter or cocoa
  • Paper plate

The errors are in the ingredient measurements for each Scout.  The correct amounts are:

Container One
1 Teaspoon Borax
1/2 cup warm water

Container Two
1/2 cup white glue
1/2 cup warm water

The instructions are the same too.

  1. Dissolve Borax into the warm water in container one
  2. Dissolve glue into the warm water in container two
  3. Slowly combine both containers into a zip lock quart size bag and add a few drops of yellow or green food coloring.
  4. Close the bag and “squish” the mixtures together to mix them. Continue to knead them until the “slime” forms and all the liquid is absorbed.

Hope that helps you with the Wolf adventure, Germs Alive!

Yours in Scouting,
Sherry

P.S.  Check out the germ magnet game!  It's also a Germs Alive! requirement.

I should've known this site before I followed the recipe in the book. It was a total waste when my den and I did the activity. Fortunately, my 7-year-old daughter was the "expert" of making slime so she helped me! LOL. We only used 2 tablespoon of Elmer's glue, 1 Tbs of Shaving gel, and 1 Tbs of contact lens solution. Oh, and the glitter as germs. When I tried with borax, it was too gritsy (if that's a word...).

I take back it back, it did work. It did take a while to slime up. But once it did it was great, the boys are going to love playing with this slime.

I tried this slim recipe and the one that's actually in the wolf book. Neither of them worked for me ☹️. Will have to keep trying. Thank though.
