Have you ever thought about having a Pinewood Derby photo booth? It’s a fun way to commemorate the most anticipated Cub Scout event of the year.
I still remember the first Derby I attended. The excitement is infectious!
Over the years, our Pinewood Derby evolved from simply showing up and racing your car to a fun family event with activities and snacks.
We decided to add a backdrop for taking pictures. This really added to the event. Parents could get cool pictures for posting on social media or sharing with grandparents.
25 Pinewood Derby Photo Booth Ideas
In this post, I’m sharing 25 Pinewood Derby photo booth ideas. You’ll find lots of suggestions from simple to elaborate and from DIY to ready-made.
These were collected from several sources including some of my Facebook followers.
Thank you to everyone who agreed to share their pictures.
Note: Where possible, I’ve linked to the original source of this image, but I couldn’t find the sources for all of them. If one of these pictures belongs to you and you want me to link to your site or you don’t want it featured, please email me at [email protected], and I’ll take care of that. Thanks!

This is my family. That year, we all made Pinewood Derby cars–even my husband and me!
For this Pinewood Derby photo booth, we used a plastic checkerboard tablecloth for the background.
One thing we learned was that plastic wasn’t the best material because the light reflected off of it causing a glare.
One of the parents in our pack had a connection to someone who owns a race car, so she got the gas cans for us.
Side note: Those cans are called dump cans. If you’re a NASCAR fan, you probably know that already.

This year, we decided to use a black cloth backdrop to avoid the glare. It worked a lot better.

This is probably my favorite from our pack. We used tires, an old gas can, and a traffic light for this Pinewood Derby photo booth. We also used a white backdrop.

I love this simple and inexpensive backdrop! A colored sheet and checkerboard bunting is all you need.

Using old tires for your Pinewood Derby photo booth adds a realistic look. Check out how they placed the trophies in front of the tires.

I’m not sure how Pack 194 made their sign, but it’s a great way to show off your pack number while standing in front of the checkerboard door covering.
You can purchase this awesome photo frame and have it personalized for your Pinewood Derby! It’s a bit pricey, but you can store it to use for several years. I love it because 3 or 4 people can be in the photo at once.

Tires, flags, traffic cones, oil cans, and traffic lights make up this snazzy backdrop.

Stephanie Ortiz shared this fun photo. Check out the jumper cables! I haven’t seen those in any other backdrops.

The Pinewood Derby winners from Wendy Hassler’s pack 781 in Cool, CA are showing off their trophies in front of this fun backdrop.

Check out this fun photo frame! It looks easy to make.

Angie Nolte-Jarvis from pack 599 in Oklahoma City, OK shared this super fun display! You’ll see a Scout sitting on one of the stools in the next photo.

The Scout can put his or her car on the other stool.

Amy Reber from pack 30 in Douglasville, GA shared this huge photo frame.
It looks like they may have set it up on a table so that it’ll stand up by itself.
You can purchase this photo frame from Etsy. The seller can personalize it for you, so you can change “Happy Birthday” to “Pinewood Derby.”

Check out this balloon display by Orange County Balloons. ! I love the “traffic light.” I’ll bet you could show this picture to any local balloon store and they could recreate it.

Kathryn Hannon from pack 303 in South Hadley, MA shared this fun Pinewood Derby photo frame! I like how the Cub Scout is holding both his car and his trophy.

Check this out! I’ll bet their pack number is 1161.

Brian James shared this creative idea! Paint your pack number on an old tire.

You can make this photo frame from black foam board and letter stickers.
Looking for fun Pinewood Derby printable activities? Check these out!

Shana Snyder from Pack 10 in Groton, NY took a photo of an actual New York driver’s license. She photoshopped it with a new name and address then had it blown up to poster size and printed. After gluing it to poster board, Shana cut out the rectangle. Very creative!

The red, white and black balloons really add to this fun Derby photo booth.

You can make your own car photo booth using these instructions from Vicky Barone at A Little Moxie.

This big photo frame is awesome! I’m not sure if this is the Cub Scout’s dad or den leader, but it’s great to have an important adult in the picture.

Love, love, love the balloon arch! And the Winner’s Circle sign really adds to this Pinewood Derby photo booth.

Another fun photo backdrop!

This isn’t a backdrop, but these are so cute! They look like they’re baseball cards. Love that they the photo of the car and the Scout with their names on it.

Check out this huge tire! How fun would it be to have your picture made while you’re standing in the middle of a tire!

I love this shot of all the parents taking pictures! 🙂 It looks like their photo frame is big enough for their entire den.
Amanda Nally from Pack 351 in Spring Hill, TN shared this with us.
So, what do you think? Did you find a Pinewood Derby photo backdrop for your pack? Share a picture with us!

I am from Pack 21 Committee Chair. We would use this really nifty gadget for all our events (pinewood derby, regatta, camping, award ceremonies, community service, all of the above). I would also use it to make a profile page for each of our scouts in our Pack and have their pics taken on the spot. I also like it so I can make small gifts on the spot.
HP Sprocket 2nd Edition Photo Printer is small enough to carry around especially if we need during our outings. Love the background photo booth idea.
Thank you!-
I think our Scout troop would love the HP sprocket in black. We are always taking pictures of the amazing things these kids are doing together and for their community. It would be awesome to capture those moments forever.

I’d LOVE the blush Sprocket! We’re always taking photos of our Scouts but hardly any gets printed. SO sad!
Thank you for the opportunity!

I love the idea of a Pinewood Derby photo booth! We didn’t get a good picture of our car last year and this year we will definitely create our own booth! With the Sprocket Noir we can make this event even more fun for our kids! I love the idea of printing the photos on stickers instantly, kids will get so important instant reward and it’s so cool sticker! Our Pack can also use this printer on graduation ceremonies, when we accepting new scouts to our Pack. We can even create a photo booth at the recruiting events to help our potential scouts to associate them with the scouting as soon as possible! This is an amazing opportunity for scouting! Thank you for sharing!

I love that Sprocket in Noir!! As a new Den Leader for a Girl Wolf Den, I would use it all the time for both Den and Pack Activities! Pinewood Derby, Popcorn Booth Sales, outings and Community Service events, Nova Awards for STEM and everything in between. What a great way to capture all our fun activities! We are Pack 1500 from Brambleton, VA!

As a mom of a scout, I think the Blush colored HP Sprocket is the best! I think it would be great to use the Sprocket to print out sticker pictures of the scouts and put it on their equipment… No more wondering who this water bottle belongs to. There are also many events that it would be fun to take pictures of the scouts and hand them out right on the spot!
Thanks for sharing this cool product with us! -
Oh the memories I can capture for my pack!! I checked it out and what a amazing product. Every pack should have one ! I really likes the luna pearl color. I can definitely see lots of collage posters beimg made to hang in our Charter church for all to see what our great scouts are accomplishing.! Thank you for the opportunity to continue to make scouting great!!

If I had my choice I would love the sprocket studio. I also like the noir sprocket. I am from Pack 412 in Antonia Mo. and we would literally use it for EVERYTHING! Pinewood derby, scouting for food, good turn, holiday parties, advancements/achievements, and the list goes on and on. We always take pictures and post them and try to send them to each other. This is the first time I’ve seen this product and it would definitely be handy!

I would love the sprocket. Noir is probably the color I’d go with. Our unit would definitely use this for special occasions like our pinewood derby, our blue and gold, and for our own pack pictures at summer camp.

I’d love the Hp 2 in one camera and printer! Thank you! My son just joined the cub scouts so can’t wait to see what events the kids would like pics of!

I love the silver sprocket. We would use our Sprocket to create a pack and den boards.

These little printers are so awesome. If I was chosen I’d love any of the colors but, I think maybe the noir. I love the idea of a photo booth. The boys would love taking silly faces and the parents will love having a memento of the night. Thank you kindly for this opportunity.

I live in a house full of boys, so any time that I get to have something pink, I’m all for it, so I would love the Blush Sprocket printer. I’m Cubmaster, so I can think of tons of great uses for it – like making licenses for Pinewood Derby or the Box Car Derby for the Lions, making thank you stickers to attach to popcorn boxes, making memory stickers at camp outs, or even having Santa come in at the Pack Christmas party and we could take pictures that way all of the kids go home with their own picture with Santa instead of waiting for me to go get the photos printed. That’s a really awesome little printer, and my Pack would love to have use of one!

The Noir model would be great. As the Cubmaster for my Pack, this would be great to have for the many events we have throughout the year.
Pinewood Derby is good, but I was thinking for our Blue & Gold — we do different themes every year and this Years is Comic Con. -
I didn’t even know that there was a printer like this! These are so nifty! I like the lilac and the pearl colors. I would use it for den meeting activities and for our pack gatherings, awards and Pinewood derbies.

So many different ways to utilize this! -
I would love the studio. But really any of them would be so awesome. Our pack would use it all the time. Most especially for Pinewood and B&G. All I can say is Awesome!!!

I like the black one its simple and compact, it will fit in my scout bag each week perfectly. I would use the Hp Sprocket to printout the scouts activities that they complete and show to the group. Most of the scouts do not keep certain things but I am sure that moms would love to keep those keepsakes. So having this Sprocket I could provide mom or sad with those mementos to share with family and friends.
