How to Make a Popsicle Stick Bird Feeder Craft

Make a fun popsicle stick bird feeder craft! This kids’ activity is super easy for all ages. All you need are craft sticks, glue, and string.

This option in our “bird feeders for kids to make” series is a popsicle stick bird feeder.  This feeder is simple to make, but it will take a little longer than the other two designs because the glue will need to dry.

Supplies Needed for Popsicle Stick Bird Feeder

• Popsicle sticks (aka craft sticks)
• Glue
• String or twine
• Scissors
• Shortening or peanut butter (I prefer shortening because you don’t have to worry about peanut allergies)
• Bird seed
• Paper plates

How to Make a Bird Feeder with Popsicle Sticks

With this design, the Scouts are basically making a platform for the bird seed out of popsicle sticks.

Start by placing two craft sticks parallel to each other. Glue two more sticks perpendicular to the first ones by putting a dab of glue at each end.

You’ll have a square at this point. Glue two more layers of sticks onto the first layer.

At this point, place and glue sticks all the way across the top so that you have a platform.

Glue two more sticks perpendicular to the platform at each end.

Allow the glue to dry then flip the structure over so that the platform is on the bottom.

Tie a piece of string (approximately 24″ long) around the top sticks near each of the corners.

Pull the strings up and tie them together so that you have a nice hanger.

Smear peanut butter or shortening on the platform. 

Since it can be substituted to make the bird feeder without peanut butter, I prefer to use shortening because you don’t have to worry about a child’s allergies.

Place the platform on a paper plate.

Sprinkle bird seed on top of the shortening.

Hang your bird feeder outside and watch for the birds!

Notes

Be sure the glue is completely dry before you put the shortening on the platform.
