A while ago, we talked about being aware of any food allergies that your Cub Scouts may have. I really hate when a boy has to be excluded from a snack or activity because he is allergic to an ingredient. With just a little planning, you can ensure that all of the boys in your den can participate in all of the activities.
This year, we have a Scout who is allergic to dairy. When we decided to do the armpit fudge activity, I knew I would need to make some accommodations for him. My boys and I made a practice batch at home and discovered that the consistency was more like frosting than fudge. So, I simply googled “dairy free frosting” to find a recipe that I could modify.
After reading several, I realized that I could use the same recipe, but just substitute a couple of ingredients. I called the Scout's mom to confirm. It's always a good idea to check with the parent even if you are certain that your modifications will be safe for him.
Armpit Fudge
1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar
1 tablespoon dairy-free butter spread (such as Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread)
2 teaspoons dairy-free cream cheese (such as Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
Put all of the ingredients in a recloseable plastic bag. Squeeze the air out of the bag and seal it. Knead the bag until all of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. You can use your armpits, your knees, your hands–anything you can think of to smush the bag!
After the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, open the bag and eat with a spoon. The consistency will be more like thick frosting than fudge.

how do I make this without cream cheese? I'm fine with adding butter but the cream cheese is a little harder....any ideas?

To be honest, I don't really know. I just worked with my Scout's mom to figure out what we needed to replace, and she suggested the dairy-free cream cheese. Sorry!

thanks for this recipe, I am planning to make armpit fudge with my Guides tonight, but saw the link to the dairy free version as well, Thank You soo much for feeling it is important to include those with allergies. If you are ever doing more cooking and need some help/support working out allergy friendly recipes I am more than happy to help out, my youngest is also dairy free (along with several other things)

Oooh! Thanks so much for the offer. When we did this activity, one of our den members had a dairy allergy. I contacted his mom to figure out the best substitutions so that he could enjoy the treat too!
