How to Play an Awesome Recycling Game

Recycling Game

Playing a recycling game is much more fun that just discussing recycling.  The boys really enjoyed this one!

Wolf Adventure – Council Fire 6a says “Learn about the three R’s of recycling: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Discover a way to do each of these at home, at school, or in your community.”

In addition to discussing what can be recycled and how to recycle in your neighborhood, we played this fun recycling bin race game.  Kids love to play games more than they love discussions, so the game broke the monotony of the den meeting.

Before the recycling game meeting, make five signs, one each for “Paper”, “Plastic,” “Glass,” “Aluminum,” and “Steel/Tin.”  Hang them in different parts of your meeting room.

Gather the boys in one area.  Tell them “You are going to be items that can be recycled, and you have to get to the correct recycling bin as quickly as possible.”

Call out the items below one at a time. Boys have to run and stand under the sign that corresponds to which recycling bin the item belongs to.

Milk jug
Cat food can
Pickle jar
Old homework papers
Junk mail
Tuna can
Jelly jar
Diet Dr. Pepper Can
Water bottle
Newspaper
Disposable pie plate
Ketchup bottle
Cereal box
Dog food can
Olive jar
Soup can
Magazines

The boys had a blast trying to get to the right bin as fast as they could!  What they didn't realize is that they were learning about recycling by playing the game.

It's easy to customize this recycling game.  Find out how your community sorts recycling, and change the signs to reflect that.  Add to or delete from the list of recyclables.  Let me know what you add by leaving a comment.  I would love to make this list longer.

Great idea. This came in handy. Was trying to come up with a fun way to teach about recycling. Using this concept tonight. Much appreciated.
