A mom from our pack shared this story with me. She was watching the 80s TV show “Fame”. During a talent show, one of the contestants was a baton twirler. One of the judges leaned over to another and said, “Why didn’t her parents invest in something that would benefit her in the future?”
The mom said she had an epiphany about Cub Scouting. Scouting does benefit our boys. The investment that we as parents make is of our time and occasionally our money.
Here are some of the benefits of investing in Cub Scouts:
Core Values – Cub Scouting encourages the development of core values through the use of the Scout Law. With a foundation of these values, our boys will become good men.
Skills Development – The Cub Scout program gives your child the opportunity to learn and practice new skills. Here are just a few of the skills that he may learn as a Bear Cub.
- Working with tools to build toolbox and birdhouse
- Gardening and landscaping
- Using a pocket knife
- Building a model
- Tying knots
- Caring for a pet
- Reading a map
- Using a compass
- Shopping for food
- Performing simple home maintenance and repairs
- Doing laundry
- Planning family events
- Creating art
And there are many, many more.
The boys are exposed to many different activities through hands-on experiences. They may decide to further pursue one of the activities, or they may simply be prepared if they need to use the skill.
So, the next time you are hurrying to get a den meeting planned while juggling the other two kids and cooking dinner, remember that you ARE preparing your child for the future regardless of what that future looks like.
Yours in Scouting,
